ID-Appartamento Alcide
Described as an Apartment but this is more of a TOWN HOUSE with a gated entrance and RIVER VIEWS AND PRIVATE PARKING.
It has a private door and "Pietra di Matraia" staircase up to the first floor where the apartment is developed. There is both a lower and higher entrance at the bottom and top of the staircase. First impressions are that the house is light and airy with high ceilings.
There is a main living area with a wood-burning stove although, it is said that the entire home does have central heating as well. There is a large eat-in kitchen.
The 'nighttime' area faces the river and has three bedrooms all with river views and two that are dual aspect. There are two bathrooms one with a bath and one with a shower.
The roof has insulation and waterproof felt but the skylight leaks a little. Everything else is in very good condition and the property has always been very well-maintained.
The attic is very spacious and could even be developed.
The views over the river are delightful and the aspect with the large courtyard in front is very pleasing. The river is clear and has a turquoise hew. The level of the river is always maintained as further up the valley, there are sluice gates controlling the speed of the water flow.
Close by is the footbridge that leads across to the historic "Casino" of Bagni di Lucca which was one of only 4 in Italy.
The Royal Casino, on the opposite side of the river, was the first public casino in Europe with permission granted in 1713. Gambling was already popular in the area and people would gather in one of the buildings in Bagni Caldi, which now houses the thermal baths, until Carlo Lodovico di Borbone commissioned Giuseppe Pardini to build the casino in 1837.
Also, within walking distance, are bars and restaurants of the spa town which was traditionally another reason for the aristocracy to visit. The hot waters can still be taken and can be booked at the Bagni Bernabo.
